Bhutan Cordyceps

It's not a plant, it's not a worm, it's a mushroom with healing powers.

Introduction

Summer grass winter worm

When a single spore falls on a certain species in the high altitudes of the Himalayan mountains, it creates yartsa gunbub which means “summer grass winter worm”. A rare and expensive mushroom, it is used as a remedy in traditional medicine and is classified as Ophiocordyceps Sinesis.

The Ophiocordyceps Sinensis species is a remarkable combination of a caterpillar and fungus. It is an entomopathogenic which means the fungus acts as a parasite of insects more specifically the fungi infects the larvae of a ghost moth.

In ancient China the mushroom was prized for its ability to improve appetite, stamina, libido and endurance as well as to impart enhanced feelings of well being and strong vigor. And in Tibet and Bhutan it has the reputation for being a precious medicinal herb used to treat severe illnesses and ailments.

There is a tale of how Tibetan yak herders noticed that when their cattle fed on the caterpillar fungus, the yaks were more energetic and could graze for much longer. When they themselves consumed the mushroom, they too felt livelier and stronger.

“Summer grass winter worm” illustrates the life cycle of the mushroom while also highlighting the parasitic nature of the fungus which infects the larvae of the ghost moth resulting in the rare formation of worm and mushroom.

FACTS & Benefits

The power of Bhutanese Cordyceps

One of the most useful things that Cordyceps sinensis appears to do is to enhance cells’ ability to utilize oxygen. This means when more oxygen reaches every cell in the body, it results in greater energy levels and improved respiratory functions.

Although written record of the use of Cordyceps sinensis in traditional Chinese Medicine appeared centuries ago, it wasn’t noticed in the West until recently. The last two decades have seen a significant increase in research on cordyceps as a medicinal mushroom.

While reasons behind some of these benefits are still not fully understood, research has shown some promising proof to back the healing and beneficial properties of cordyceps. For instance, studies have shown that cordyceps contain:
